Plant genetics: Fast flowering

چکیده

Poplars are fast-growing trees of cool, temperate climates that find use in the manufacture of pulp, matches and packing cases. They are also widely grown for shelter and for ornamental purposes. Poplars are deciduous trees that flower in the spring soon after new leaves arise. Flowers develop from the axils of these leaves, and arise on short stems carrying a string of flowers (a catkin). They are either male or female depending on the individual tree. As in most plants, poplars do not flower immediately, but need to undergo a period of purely vegetative growth before they will produce floral shoots. This means they may flower only after eight or more seasons of growth, a major constraint to breeding programs. Because they are readily grown from cuttings, many poplar plantations are clones of just one individual, so one aim of breeding programs is to increase the diversity of forms available.

Fast-Flowering Mini-Maize: Seed to Seed in 60 Days.

Two lines of Zea mays were developed as a short-generation model for maize. The Fast-Flowering Mini-Maize (FFMM) lines A and B are robust inbred lines with a significantly shorter generation time, much smaller stature, and better greenhouse adaptation than traditional maize varieties. Five generations a year are typical. FFMM is the result of a modified double-cross hybrid between four fast-flo...

Comparative biology comes into bloom: genomic and genetic comparison of flowering pathways in rice and Arabidopsis.

Huge advances in plant biology are possible now that we have the complete genome sequences of several flowering plants. Now, genomes can be comprehensively compared and map-based cloning can be performed more easily. Association study is emerging as a powerful method for the functional identification of genes and molecular genetics has begun to reveal the basis of plant diversity. Taking the fl...

Genetics of quantitative and qualitative traits of isabgol (Plantago ovata).

Isabgol is a medicinal plant known for its high-quality dietary fiber. The genetics and inheritance of economic characters, such as number of panicles, panicle length, seed yield, and swelling factor, were measured by diallel analysis of F(1) progenies from seven parents. The additive component of genetic variance was significant for days to flowering, plant height, branches/plant, peduncle len...

Evolution of developmental mechanisms in plants.

As our understanding of developmental mechanisms in flowering plant species has become more advanced, an appreciation of the need to understand how distinct plant morphologies are generated has grown. This has led to an awareness of the key morphological differences in distinct land plant groups and to an assessment of the major innovations that occurred during land plant evolution. Recent adva...

Heritability and genetic advance in rapeseed (Brassica napus L.)

The present study was carried out to estimate genetic variability parameters for some traits such as pods per plant, cell membrane stability, one thousand kernel weight, flowering period, grain filling period, chlorophyll content, relative water content, leaf excised water content, seed per pod and pod length, in 16 winter rapeseed genotypes. Statistical analysis showed significant differences ...

Flowering time in maize: linkage and epistasis at a major effect locus.

In a previous study, we identified a candidate fragment length polymorphism associated with flowering time variation after seven generations of selection for flowering time, starting from the maize inbred line F252. Here, we characterized the candidate region and identified underlying polymorphisms. Then, we combined QTL mapping, association mapping, and developmental characterization to dissec...
